This cost may be large or small but one can weigh this cost with the alternative before he or she makes any decision. In the essay, ââ¬Å"The Price of Crossing Bordersâ⬠written by Eduardo Porter, the concept of understanding that there is a price for everything is conveyed. There is no decision that is made or path that is taken that comes without some sort of cost to us personally. An alternate title of Porterââ¬â¢s article, ââ¬Å"The Cost of The Decisions We Makeâ⬠, responds to his views on this idea. He tries to persuade his audience that ââ¬Å"by evaluating opportunity costs, we organize our livesâ⬠(p. 325). In the essay, Porter used an illegal immigrant from Stockton, California as an example to help understand opportunity costs. The immigrant must make a choice on how he is going to get his children across the Mexico border into the United States. Porter stated, ââ¬Å"The conversation laid in stark relief the type of bare-knuckle cost-benefit analyses that steer peopleââ¬â¢s livesâ⬠(p. 326). By this statement, Porter referred to the decision of how the immigrant will transport his children and the costs that it will entail. While the more expensive choice is safer, saving the money will take some time. The cheaper alternative, however, puts his children in danger and the possible risk of not making it safe or alive to the United States. Porter said, ââ¬Å"The cost of taking any action or embracing any path consists of the alternatives that were available to us at the timeâ⬠(p. 325). The illegal immigrant must weigh his opportunity cost of each path before making the im portant decision regarding his childrenââ¬â¢s lives. The debate on illegal immigration in the United States is well known and people have very strong views on it. While one extreme thinks the borders should be closed off all together and all immigrants sent back to their country, the opposing view feels we were all immigrants at one time and everyone deserves a chance at starting a new life in this country. Porter alluded that most peopleââ¬â¢s arguments against illegal immigrants in this country are fairly weak. He disagreed with those that argue illegal immigrants pose a burden due to the services they consume such as health care, food stamps, or lower the working wages for American workers. He stated, ââ¬Å"most immigrants work on the books using false IDââ¬â¢s, and have taxes withheld from their paycheck like any other worker. They canââ¬â¢t draw benefits from most government programsâ⬠(p. 327). Basically without the proper legal documentation, illegal immigra nts cannot collect welfare, food stamps, unemployment, etc. He also said, ââ¬Å"there is scant evidence that immigrants lower the wages of American workersâ⬠(p. 327). Since most illegal immigrants work jobs that many Americans deem undesirable, they are really primarily competing against other poor illegal immigrants. If anything, illegal immigrants actually help many companies thrive or even exist. Without these immigrants, Californiaââ¬â¢s agricultural industry would be nonexistent and many of the goods it produces would be imported. Everything affects prices in the United States. Porter claimed that illegal immigrants affect prices but not in a negative manner. With a higher number of immigrants, some jobs such as gardening and housekeeping have actually seen a decrease in the average price of services. Though many politicians claim to be reforming immigration laws, Porter stated little will be done soon. Illegal immigrants provide cheap labor to many of this countryââ¬â¢s thriving businesses. While the United States will probably not make it any easier for illegal immigrants to enter the country, they will also not completely do away with them either due to the enormous cost. In the end, all illegal immigrants must weigh the cost of their decision to enter this country against the cost of staying in their own. Is the cost of risking their life and their familiesââ¬â¢ life worth the chance at a minimum wage job and the chance for prosperity in the United States? Porter felt that based on the historical tre nd, many immigrants will continue to choose the more dangerous path for a chance at the American dream.

This will involve making initial assumption that will be made from inspection of the model and experience in playing the game. With these assumptions in mind I will carry out an experiment on the table to justify or correct my assumptions. After a clear understanding of the reality of the model I will attempt to compile a few practical points that will improve the performance of the player when they are playing in the specific environment that is being modelled. The models environment: There are many shots that can be played on the pool table that require different aspects of skill. The specific environment that I will be testing is the snookered shot. This means there is a ball between the cue ball and my colour (red). One of the options I have is to rebound the shot off the cushion and hit the ball. This would normally require experience in order to be accurate enough to hit the cushion in the right place. The model I will be testing will help the play know where to hit the cushion in order to hit the red ball. The elasticity of the cushion and the velocity of the ball are variables when determining the impulse from the cushion on the ball, this will affect the angle on the cushion. Assumptions: Due to my experience with playing pool I have formulated a few important factors for the experiement. I will start by looking at the constants these include velocity, which will remain the same through out the experiment. The next is the momentum, which will be treated as having been conserved and not lost in the collision with the cushion. These two points will allow me to use a basic model that uses only the knowledge I have acquired. In addition to this I will exclude the effect of sliding or spin on the ball, the motion of this is too difficult for me to model. The model: Newtons laws of impacts state that the initial speeds U1 and U2 collide so that final speeds V1 and V2 are produced under the effect of the coefficient of restitution. The ramp was made so that the ball rolled down the rims of the guard so that it did not hit the screw fixing along the centre of the mudguard seen in the picture. The ramp was modified so that just before the end of the ramp the rims were made wider so that the ball was released on to the surface without bouncing. The ramp was tested before the experiment so see if it was accurate enough to hit the same point consistently, which it achieved. The ramp also considered the height the ball was released every launch by a notch at the top of the ramp. (see picture) The ball was held at the top of the ramp by a single figure holding the centre of the ball, this reduced spin on the ball when travelling down the slope. The same ball was used every launch to eliminate variables. The ramp was positioned on the surface so that it was always the same distance for a marked point on the cushion. The ramp was moved along this perimeter to change the angle of approach. To position the ramp I used trigonometry using the lengths of two cushions. Below is an example of the calculations required to put the ramp in the exact place. This value was then measured up the black line on the diagram above and traced onto the perimeter of the cushion points semi circle. This method was accurate but as the angle increased the ramp was moved closer to the cushion opposite the marker point. This meant the table was too narrow to continue readings, so I had to change the adjacent length to allow the readings to continue. When the ramp was correctly lined up, which was done by trial and improvement of rolling balls down the ramp, I ran the test three times to get an average. Each run of the experiment measured the distance from the cushion to the perpendicular cushion where the ball had hit. This was then processed in the same way but the opposite way round. This was then repeated for all the angles between 10? and 90?. All the readings taken were measured to the nearest 0. 5 of a cm. This has been taken into consideration in the table of results. The pictures show the markings in chalk on the table. The picture to the left has the 50? , 70? and 90? markings on it. Results: This table continues to show the coefficient of restitution as a result from comparing the two angles. Before I analyse the results more carefully I will point out the values in the table that I think are the most reliable. At these angles the collision between the ball and the cushion is more consistent and there is less component force parallel to the cushion to make the ball slide through the mark on the cushion. The graph shows the upper and lower bound for the coefficient of restitution, it was necessary to include the upper and lower bounds due to the inaccuracies of the measured angles. The lengths were measured to the nearest millimetre. The prediction stated that the coefficient of restitution should be constant at 0. 8. The results show that the coefficient never reaches this level so there is clearly a factor that needs explaining. The difference is probably because of the frictional effect on the ball and a variation of spin on the ball as it rolled down the ramp. Also there would have been slight inconsistencies in my method due to human inaccuracy. Corrections On review of the method I have found that the I have translated the model into my method with a small mistake. The angles that I initially measured were measuring from the wrong point on the ball. The trig method I used meant the balls centre had to hit the cushion; instead it was the surface of the ball. To correct this mistake I had to look at the diameter of the ball and decrease the according lengths. The balls diameter was 52 mm so this meant I had to decrease the two measurements perpendicular to the cushion. These were D1 and D2, the table below shows the corrections made followed by the corrected graph. These corrections changed the angles of ? so that the smaller angles got smaller and larger angles stayed the same. This had the effect of deducing the coefficient of restitution for the smaller angles but not for the larger angles. This is why the corrected graph starts lower and then maps onto the original graph. As well as the variation due to human inaccuracy in measuring shown above there are other forms of variation that affected my results, these were spin and sliding. The effect of these is too complicated so I have explained them and drawn diagrams to give an idea. Both of these could have changed the results by an unknown amount. Due to personal experience of the game it is usually for the ball to slide more along the cushion at smaller angles, this could be because of friction and would explain the difference between my results and the predictions. On the diagram is shown the ball sliding through the mark. The ball is supposed to hit the black mark, but instead hits at the red mark and rolls along the cushion to leave at the light green mark. This would work by having a measure attached to the side of the table and then video taping the balls cushion with the cushions. This would give more accurate marks. To reduce spin on the ball I would add a rubber surface to the ramp to ensure the ball had to roll down the slope and not spin or slide. This would set the ball rolling and so the points where the ball collided would be more accurate. The predictions came from a source off the Internet and they might not be the correct for the pool table I used. The predicted coefficient was an average for most pool tables, but really in order to evaluate this method I need the accurate coefficient for my table. This could be found by using light gates to measure the speed of the ball off the ramp and after the collision with the cushion. The speed of departure over the speed of approach would have given me the correct coefficient to compare to my results. Overall the correlation between the predicted results and my results is very bad, this means that my model is very basic and does not look at the effects on the table, such as spin and sliding. The Sierra Club as an Interest Group The Sierra Club is a national organization dedicated to the preservation of the environment. Founded in 1892 in California by conservationist John Muir, the Club is made up of 750,000 people devoted to the exploration, enjoyment, and the protection of the natural environmental. Headquartered in San Francisco, it has numerous state and regional chapters taking part in the fight for protection. According to Janda, an important part of pluralism was that new interest groups form as a matter of course when the need arises (Janda 176). Such is the case with the Sierra Club. With the establishment of Yosemite National Park by the US Congress in 1890, the Club formed two years later in 1892 to lead a campaign to defeat a proposed reduction in the boundaries of the Park. Moreover, the Sierra Club formed when there was a need and rising interest in environmental preservation. Another important aspect of interest group formation is leadership. Founding the Sierra Club, John Muir was an explorer, naturalist and writer devoted to the environment. Campaigning for the conservation of land, water and forests in the United States, he helped influence congress to pass the Yosemite National Park Bill and persuaded President Teddy Roosevelt to protect 150 million acres of forest reserves. His devotion and effort helped many people begin to understand the importance of conservation. Not just confined to information in books, his commitment allowed people to experience nature for themselves. Who is being organized is also an important factor. Regarding the Sierra Club, a range of people were organized. Whether rich, educated, businessmen, farmers, or women, environmental protection is important to... ...rent perspectives, environmental protection will be a topic of debate and controversy. In conclusion, the Sierra Club is a national interest group. Because of a disturbance, leadership and numerous like-minded individuals, the Sierra Club successfully organized in 1892. Taking on roles of representation, participation, education, agenda building and program monitoring, the it owes much of its success to its resources of members, money and lobbyists. As a group, the Club has accomplished much through direct lobbying, grassroots initiatives, high-tech lobbying and coalition building. Roses in the Desert Hearts starve as well as bodies, give us bread, but give us roses! - James Oppenheim, line of ââ¬Å"Bread and Roses,â⬠poem written in 1911, quoting the protest slogans of female industrial workers What brings the human heart to starve? Such a critical question acutely fits into the rhyme and reason of character and theme in Stargirl and Holes. Discerning the meaning of a hungry human heart, against a back drop of parched desert environments, protagonists Leo, Stargirl and Stanley Yelnats walk in worlds fraught with injustice and cutting unkindness. From Mica highschool to Camp Green Lake, authors Jerry Spinelli and Louis Sachar do not shy away from illustrating worlds connected to the industrial jungle which prompted Oppenheimââ¬â¢s 1911 poem; rather, within these American deserts, their protagonists help readers to explore theories of nonconformity, loyalty, and altruism. Through Stanleyââ¬â¢s good humor and intermittent kindness in agreeing to teach Zero to read, Leoââ¬â¢s self-conscious perspective as narrator, and Stargirlââ¬â¢s selfless generosity in giving porcupine neck ties and African violets, Sachar and Spinelli question that which starves and that which nourishes our living human hearts. What does it mean to fit in? As creatures designed for community living, we desire to be liked, to be appreciated, and to be included among groups. Leo knows how to fit in; he knows not to be being singled out in the crowd, how to dress, what to say, especially against the flamboyant nonconformity of Stargirl. Stanley also stands out in a crowd, but not by choice; overweight, he doesnââ¬â¢t ââ¬Å"have any friends at homeâ⬠and ââ¬Å"kids at school often teased him about his size,â⬠and coming from a poor family, he longs to do things that ââ¬Å"just like rich kidsâ⬠(Sachar 7, 6). His notebook is dropped in the toilet by pint-sized bullies and his family is under a curse. In Stanley, optimistic about ââ¬Å"swimming in a lakeâ⬠despite his ominous detainment in a detention center, there exists the same good humor and optimism that sustains his inventive father. In revealing Stanleyââ¬â¢s smile at their ââ¬Å"family jokeâ⬠to readers, Sachar shows hi s protagonistââ¬â¢s strength in inherited humor and the strength of his imagination; his family stories feed him and he is lifted out of where he is by the power of his memory. Against ghastly, sweltering conditions and the injustice of his own incarceration, Stanleyââ¬â¢s sense of humor saves him from breaking;

Comparison between Because I Could Not Stop For Death and Come Up From the Fields Father Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman were two of the best poets in America, during the nineteenth century. They were both rebellious each in his own way. The shared some features, especially their abandonment of the usual form of poetry and their use of free verse instead. In comparing the poems ââ¬Å"Because I Could Not Stop For Deathâ⬠by Dickinson and ââ¬Å"Come Up From the Fields Fatherâ⬠by Whitman, we can notice some similarities. Both poems have some kind of music though there is no rhyme scheme, due to the use of free verse. They both use repetition of some words. Dickinson repeated the words ââ¬Å"we passedâ⬠. While Whitman repeated several words such as ââ¬Å"wakingâ⬠, ââ¬Å"longingâ⬠, ââ¬Å"withdrawâ⬠and ââ¬Å"betterâ⬠. They both used descriptive language. Dickinson described the ââ¬Å"Dewsâ⬠that ââ¬Å"drew quivering and chillâ⬠, her ââ¬Å"gownâ⬠which was made of ââ¬Å"Gossamerâ⬠, her ââ¬Å"Tippetâ⬠which was ââ¬Å"only Tulleâ⬠. She also gave us a description of the house of death, which was ââ¬Å"A swelling of the ground, The roof was scarcely visible, The Cornice in the groundâ⬠. Yet Whitman used more descriptions in his poem. He described the fields of Ohioââ¬â¢s villages in autumn and their beauty. He described the ââ¬Å"apples ripeâ⬠, the ââ¬Å"grapes on the trellisââ¬â¢d vinesâ⬠, ââ¬Å"the sky so calm, so transparent after the rainâ⬠. He made us feel as if we were smelling the grapes, the buckwheat and touching them. He made us hear the buzzing of the bees. He also made us experience the awe and misery of the mother by describing her ââ¬Å"trembling stepsâ⬠when she went to read the letter, her ââ¬Å"sickly white face and dull in the headâ⬠. In addition to her state after her sonââ¬â¢s death, she was ââ¬Å"presently drest in blackâ⬠, ââ¬Å"her meals untouchedâ⬠, ââ¬Å"fitfully sleeping often wakingâ⬠and her ââ¬Å"deep longingâ⬠¦to be with her dead sonâ⬠. Dickinson uses imaginative and somehow figurative language. She personifies death as a gentleman who kindly takes her for a journey in his carriage. She also personifies immortality as a person riding with them in the carriage. She uses paradox ââ¬Å"The Cornice in the groundâ⬠. Whereas Whitmanââ¬â¢s language is poetic and realistic. Both poems discuss the view of death, but from different perspectives. Dickinson gives us a joyous and happy view of death, which is like a kind gentleman that takes her for a journey. He is so civil, therefore she willingly gives him her ââ¬Å"laborâ⬠and ââ¬Å"leisure tooâ⬠. She is not afraid of death, she instead receives it calmly. Whereas Whitmanââ¬â¢s view is the contrary. A question arises as to how governments
Employment is important for every individual. Employment is a source of income whether it is a private job or a government job. Depending on education, experience and caliber, individuals are offered jobs in specific cadres. Every job carries certain responsibilities whether it is a labor job, clerical job or a senior management job.There are certain management principles that are required to be practicedà for every employee at every level of job functioning. Government and businesses cannot function without people and in fact efficient employees are the greatest asset for organizations to grow towards profit and development. A question arises as to how governments have a role to play in private sector.The answer to this question is, in order to bring transparency in private sector businesses, there are certain legal enactments i.e. Employment relations Act 2004, Companies Act, Corporate Insolvency Law and many other legal rules for every purpose of public or private sector.à T hese enactments contain rules and regulations which can be referred whenever there is a requirement for fulfilling a provision.For instance Employment Relations Act 2004 states about employee and employer relations and how these have to be maintained which is required to be followed by both private sector and public sector, which reduces a number of conflicts and disputes that could occur without these legal rules.The relation of employee and employer is slightly a difficult task to manage with, and at one point of time, appears much easier depending on the situation.à However, every employee and employer have to be careful with the jobs being held with in respective organizations.There are many human resource management books which detail and discuss about employee and employer relations within office environment as well with office related aspects of management. Management of relation involves both personal manners as well treating others with respect.In management, there are a lso barriers of culture, origin of a person and much in respect of working environment. Especially in industrial sector, where there are quite a number of workers and who carry grievances or demands in paying high salaries, asking for more number of leisure hours or bonus payments etc., The skill and efficiency of management is evident in handling trade unions of industries.Trade unions are very tough to deal with and when the demands of union are not met with, closure of factories, stopping production or working on strike, or slow production and such other activities are undertaken. Therefore, management of industries have to be extremely careful with industrial workers.Governments in order to assist industries have enacted Employment Relations Act 2004. This Act specially deals with labor laws and trade union rights.à à UK government also introduced Employment Bill 2007 ââ¬â 2008 which covers all aspects of employment law. This would further improve the effectiveness of e mployment law which would benefit employers, trade unions, individuals and public sector.à It also protects workers and encourages law-abiding businesses.Dispute resolutions is one area which is always required in workplaces.à In this regard, the Bill details about statutory procedures and related provisions about dismissal cases.à Apart from the above, the Bill clarifies about National Minimum Wage and which imposes penalties on non-compliance methods in respects of payment of salaries, calculation of arrears and also strengthens employment agencies.
